BECAUSE BLACK NURSES MATTER!
The Pacific Northwest is one of the most racially isolating places in the country to be a Black nurse.
Join us in addressing the heart of the problem by creating a community dedicated to caring for the ones who care for us.
How it started
Black nurses in this state not only have to meet the demands of their professional position, but they also have to navigate racism at every step of the process.
Our ABNAO membership is rife with story after story of discrimination in the healthcare industry. Stories of Black nursing students feeling left out of their student body community. Stories of white professors sabotaging the efforts of their Black students. Stories of white doctors overlooking the achievements of Black nurses, all while praising their white nurse colleagues. Stories of white patients treating their Black nurses as incompetent. The stories are ongoing, diverse, and heartbreaking.
And yet, our ABNAO membership is also overflowing with other stories. Stories of Black nurses that achieve excellence in their field. Stories of Black nurses that break glass ceilings and usher their peers through to reach their goals. Black nurses who make space for other BIPOC colleagues to feel safe in their work environment. These are the stories that often go overlooked, but not anymore!
Partnering with the Pacific Northwest Community
ABNAO seeks to partner with the Pacific Northwest community to illuminate these realities and push toward a better way. Join us in creating a new story of offering some much-needed love and care to our Black nurses and healthcare professionals!

The Nurture a Black Nurse Donation Program
HOW:
Donate goods, services, or monetary support towards gift boxes that will be delivered to the nurses of ABNAO regularly as a reminder that the Pacific Northwest is also full of allies that want to show support and see an end to racism in healthcare.
WHO:
Any individual, group, or business that believes Black nurses matter in the Pacific Northwest and everywhere else and wants to offer them a moment of joy and gratitude.
WHEN:
ABNAO accepts donations for the Nurture a Black Nurse Donation Program often. Pay close attention to your emails once you sign up to hear of open donation periods. ABNAO is a 501c3, all donations are tax-deductible.
WHY:
We know that gift boxes do not solve racism. We also know that feeling nurtured by your community can bring moments of joy to our Black nurses who work so hard to care for others in a state that has historically failed to care for them.
Thank you for joining the effort to make Oregon a safer space to be a Black nurse!
By donating to these gift boxes you mark yourself as a supporter of Black nurses. How thoughtful! As part of our community, you will receive information about special donor gifts and be invited to events that celebrate allyship while giving back to Black healthcare workers.
